Gerard Long of Prayer at the Heart

Gerard Long of Prayer at the Heart

Gerard miraculously came back to life after being dead for 30 minutes from a cardiac arrest! Suddenly, waking up from an induced coma, he had an increased urgency to complete a specific calling on his life.

From the depths of his broken heart, he wrote a book, Living Hope, to share what he had learned in a period of catastrophic suffering — the suicide of his beloved youngest son and then the unimaginable, unbelievable death of his beautiful daughter.

From his life experiences, his close walk with God and his rich knowledge of scripture, Gerard helps people to answer questions such as:

  • Where is God in my suffering?

  • Where do you find love and strength to carry on?

  • How can you have peace in the storm?

At the end of 2021, Gerard accepted a call to be Executive Director of Prayer at the Heart, a national movement of unified, humble, desperate prayer to ignite another great awakening.

Living Hope endorsements include:

“Reading this book will make a huge difference in your life.”

Ken Sande of Peacemaker Ministries and RW360

By God’s grace, I’ve had the privilege of founding two organizations that are dedicated to preserving and transforming relationships: Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom 360 (RW360).

I was raised on a ranch in Montana. Initially trained as a mechanical engineer, I worked for a medical research and development company in California. Leading a team of creative and highly competitive engineers triggered a life-long interest in building relationships, conflict management, and creative problem-solving.

I eventually returned to school in Montana to pursue a degree in law, thinking I would apply my engineering background to product liability litigation. But God had other ideas. A year after graduation, he called me into biblical peacemaking and led me to found the Christian Conciliation Service of Montana, which eventually grew into Peacemaker Ministries.

I spent thirty exhilarating years leading the Peacemaker team, whose vision is to “transform relationships with the power of the gospel.” During that time I taught in hundreds of settings throughout the U.S. and the world and mediated countless conflicts ranging from simple personal disputes to church splits and complex lawsuits.

Drawing on these  experiences, I authored The Peacemaker (which has sold over 500,000 copies in twenty languages), and coauthored three related books. I also helped to produce numerous articles, video series and training resources that are now being used to equip peacemakers around the world.

The common thread through all of these resources is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the good news that God so loved the world that he sent his only Son to die for our sins and be resurrected to new life so we could be reconciled to God and enjoy him forever, live in peace with those around us, and experience increasingly fulfilling relationships.

I have been privileged to work with many Christian leaders who have a similar love for the gospel and enthusiastically support and endorse our approach to peacemaking and relational wisdom.

I’ve had the privilege of serving as an Editorial Adviser for Christianity Today’s Building Church Leaders, Managing Your Church, and Church Law and Tax panels. I am a Certified Christian Conciliator™, as well as a Certified Emotional Intelligence Instructor, trained through TalentSmart. I’ve also served as a Certified Professional Engineer, as a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the Montana Bar Association and as an elder in my church.
